GRE Preparation - Part 2This course features a math review and techniques for tackling the quantitative comparison, discrete quantitative, and data interpretation questions that make up the math section of the GRE. We will also cover time saving techniques for both the paper-based and computer administrations of the test.

This course includes a knowledgeable and caring instructor who will guide you through your lessons, facilitate discussions, and answer your questions. The instructor for this course will be Scott and Lisa Hatch.

Syllabus:

All courses run for six weeks, with a two-week grace period at the end. Two lessons are released each week for the six-week duration of the course. You do not have to be present when the lesson is released, but you must complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

A new section of each course starts on the second or third Wednesday of each month. If enrolling in a series of two or more courses, please be sure to space the start date for each course at least two months apart.

Week One
Wednesday - Lesson 01
You may have heard that you can't study for the GRE. But that's just not true! There are a bunch of things you can do to prepare for the GRE, and the more time you spend preparing, the better your scores will be. In our first lesson, we'll go over all the things you need to know about the general makeup of the GRE so you'll know exactly what you're getting into come test day. You'll learn how to relax when you start feeling panicky, how to eliminate the wrong answers the tests try to entice you to choose, how to guess when you're not sure of the right answer, and how much time to spend on each question.

Friday - Lesson 02
If you're not familiar with the kinds of GRE questions that test your math skills, you'll know exactly what to expect once you've completed this lesson. You've probably seen the traditional multiple-choice math questions before, but have you experienced quantitative comparisons? In this lesson, we'll go over the comparisons, and you'll learn what it's like to encounter data interpretation and discrete quantitative fun.

Week Two
Wednesday - Lesson 03
You learned arithmetic in grade school, but you may have forgotten some of the basics that you'll see in the GRE math sections. Don't worry! In today's lesson, we'll do a complete review of the essentials. We'll go over a lot of the things you probably remember, like how to perform multiplication and division, as well as some of the things that might be a little fuzzy, like exponents and fractions.

Friday - Lesson 04
Of course, the GRE tests what you know about algebra! So in this lesson, we'll review all the pertinent standard algebra concepts you may not remember from high school. We'll discuss variables, factoring, functions, and a whole bunch of other fun stuff so that you know exactly what you need to answer the many algebra-related questions on the GRE.

Week Three
Wednesday - Lesson 05
Since geometry is another component of the GRE math questions, we'll make sure you're prepared for it in today's lesson. Our review will remind you of the properties of angles, triangles, squares, circles, and other shapes so that you can answer questions that ask for pesky measurements. We'll also go over coordinate geometry and throw in some valuable information about graphing functions so you'll be ready for all sorts of geometry when you sit for the GRE.

Friday - Lesson 06
You don't have to take a statistics class to master the concepts that the GRE tests you on. Most of the statistics, probability, and other less-familiar math questions on the GRE are pretty basic. In this lesson, we'll make sure you're prepared for them all. By the time you're finished, you'll know everything you need to know about tendency, frequency, and probability to ace the GRE.

Week Four
Wednesday - Lesson 07
Now that we've reviewed math concepts, we'll apply them to a question type that you might not have seen before. GRE quantitative comparison questions give you two values that you have to evaluate to determine which is greater . . . or they could be equal, or you may not be able to tell from the information provided. If this sounds confusing, don't worry. In this lesson, we'll review a system for dealing with this unique question type

Friday - Lesson 08
They say that practice makes perfect, so after today's lesson, you'll have more opportunity to reach perfection! Through our analysis of previous GRE quantitative comparison questions, you'll see just how to approach and answer these questions correctly. And you'll have an opportunity to discuss any questions you have about your practice with your instructor and classmates.

Week Five
Wednesday - Lesson 09
Don't worry—the standard multiple-choice "discrete quantitative" questions appear in the GRE math section as well. In today's lesson, you'll practice using the tools you'll need to work through these questions quickly, and we'll go over some tips that will help you eliminate answer choices and choose the correct answer without working out lengthy equations.

Friday - Lesson 10
In this lesson, we'll do a thorough examination of previous GRE multiple-choice math questions so you can practice your skills and evaluate your improvement on the GRE math test. You'll be whipping through the answer choices in no time!

Week Six
Wednesday - Lesson 11
One particular type of GRE multiple-choice math question is the data interpretation question. These questions usually aren't too difficult if you're prepared for them, and preparing for them is what this lesson is all about! You'll learn how to evaluate charts and graphs and apply your evaluation to a set of answer choices so you know just which answer to choose.

Friday - Lesson 12
In addition to providing you with practice on actual GRE data interpretation questions from previous tests, in today's lesson, we'll review the tips and strategies you'll need to know in order to do your best on the GRE math questions. By the time we finish this lesson, you'll understand what you need to know for each math subject on the tests. You'll have reviewed what you should focus on, and you'll know how to spend every moment of study time until you enter the exam site and strut your stuff on test day.
